CropShare – loved by the Community!

All in it Together: Community Supported Agriculture and Cambridge CropShare
Guest post by Caitlin McCormack
I spend some of my Saturdays helping out on a local farm. A group of us go and lend a hand with the sowing, planting, harvesting or weeding that needs doing that particular week. In return, we take home seasonal veg, as well as joining in on a big, shared lunch where everyone brings a dish and sits around drinking tea and chatting. The fresh air and exercise and chance...

CSA conference 2013 in Stroud
After meeting many inspirational CSAs (Community-Supported Agriculture projects) at my visit to the Eastern Region CSA gathering in June I was excited about the prospect of catching up with some familiar faces as well as a whole bunch of other projects at the National Conference in December, so me and Helen booked ourselves tickets to the conference and the train to Stroud, a place neither of us had visited before.

The Hole truth and nothing but the truth
This week’s CropShare farm day saw Farmer Paul (@waterlanderman on twitter) hit rock bottom as he attempted to dig himself into the ground for his winter hibernation. Read on to discover what could have driven him to this state…
First job to get stuck into was planting out 40 or so native saplings, kindly given to us by Bev as part of her Woodland Trust project – ta Bev! We dug holes and planted rowan, wild...
Apple and Squash Harvest
It’s time to harvest squash and apple crops at the farm!
The orchard had a tidy up this month as we scythed away long grass around the young trees to let our pickers through. The sheep have also been running around in there keeping the grass down.
The apple trees were all budded by Farmer Paul and are about 10 years old now. Varieites include various Laxtons, Spartan and Greensleeves.
And after safely storing away our harvest, how better to celebrate than...
Potato and onion harvest
What on earth did CropShare get up to his time?
Among all the balancing tricks…
In field games…
Fencing matches with large organic weed plants (Fat Hen is great for this)…
Ferret play time…
We actually managed to harvest LOADS of onions and potatos! It’s a wonder we get stuff done 😉
Farmer Paul first lifts the potatoes with a harvester – which leaves them near the soil surface for us to pick....
CropShare circus!
Seems like we have branched out here at CropShare, and our farming volunteers have become tumblers and balancers! Here's what we got up to at lunchtime at the farm......
